Sharon & I started looking for a '69 convertible around the end of 1998. I was intent on finding a pace car. The search took us from one end of California to the other. During this time a white '69 surfaced and started lurking in the back of my mind. Intent on a pace car I made a bonsai flight to San Diego to look at one. I knew it was going to be the one, "third times a charm"...Right? Arriving at the airport, the seller picked me up in a real hot '65 vette (Going good so far!). The first thing the seller asked was if I could drive a stick! (Does a bear... never mind!) As it turned out he had to pick up his Porsche and wanted me to follow him in the Vette. We drove 45 min. to get to his house (I was getting thumbs up from every third car that I passed and the thought of how far would I get if I just keep going came to mind... As we wound our way through the foothills my thoughts turned to seeing this pace car. If it was half the car the vette was I would be in heaven.
The garage door opens and the seller pulls the car out into the driveway. He offers too, and puts the car up on jack stands so I could give it a good going over. This is where the disappointment started to set in. Way too much bondo, floors were rusted through in many spots. The passenger door sagged badly (had to really lift it to close it) and the mechanical's were in about the same shape. The Motor turned out to be a '67 327 with the pad re-stamped with the VIN too boot! The flight home was a long one but gave me time to think things out! That white '69 was sounding much better as each mile flew buy! It has all the options the pace car had to offer, was in much better shape and was not near the cost! For a fun driver I could live with that, yes indeed...
I had to put together the interior and took the time to take the dash apart and reassemble it. We have added a 700R4 transmission, a new 383ci mill and a bit of detailing under the hood. She handled nice as she has front discs, koni shocks and poly bushings through out. I upgraded to Hotchkis springs front and rear to give her a better stance and prothane subframe bushings as well as the visible 17" Budnik's. This car now handles and drives like a dream. What a car she is and has been nick named "The White Wonder"
